Located to the north of Italy, Florence, the capital city of Tuscany, is a small town just off the banks of the River Arno, with a very rich history and cultural heritage.
Florence was established as a military garrison of strategic importance in 50 BC by Julius Caesar because it was on the Northern European route, which the Romans had been eyeing for expansion.
Under the rule of the noble De Medici family that patronized Renaissance Art, Florence in Tuscany came to be regarded as the birthplace of the renaissance during the 14th century, with the Renaissance movement reaching its peak during the rule of Lorenzo the Magnificent who belonged to the Medici family. Great men Leonardo Da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo Buonarroti, Galileo, Donatello and Raphael all benefited from Medici patronage.
The European Renaissance spanned 14th to 17th centuries and Florence came under French control for a significant part of the 18th century and later under Napoleon for a brief period towards the end of the century. In 1860, Florence became part of unified Italy.
